Freaky Comp Friday: Caught on Video!

Roberto Ceniceros of Business Insurance, recently highlighted a case of criminal fraud in the workers' comp system. Mr. Hossein Navaei, a night desk worker at a California hotel, claimed he was the victim of an assault by his supervisor and supervisor's son. The reason for the assault? He claimed he was merely trying to collect wages owed him by his employer.

Mr. Navaei's story didn't pan out. Instead, a jury found him guilty and convicted him for preparing a fraudulent document and attempted perjury for trying to collect workers' comp benefits for his alleged injuries.

A video played for the jury recorded by the hotel's security camera showed there was indeed a verbal argument between Mr. Navaei and his employer, but not the physical attack he claimed caused his injuries.

It gets even more interesting. Apparently, Mr. Navaei, appealed the conditions of his probation. Read the full story by Roberto Ceniceros.

Assistive Technology 101

Assistive technology helps people with disabilities perform functions that may otherwise be difficult, or even impossible. Assistive technology can include any of the following: mobility devices such as walkers or wheelchairs; computer hardware, software or peripherals that enable people with disabilities to access computers or other information technologies that help them perform daily operations, and therefore become more self sufficient.

Examples of assistive technology include: specialty keyboards designed with large keys or a special mouse or joystick for people with limited hand function; voice-recognition software for people who have motor disabilities; or eye tracking devices for people who have no control or limited control over their hand movements.

Microsoft provides a very succinct overview of the full array of assistive technologies available on the market today.

Freaky Comp Friday: Death by Chocolate

Think it's a joke? Unfortunetly, this is a true story. As covered by SafetyNewsAlerta worker died last summer after falling into a vat of chocolate. Now, the two companies involved in the accident are facing OSHA fines. In addition, both companies face serious violations for:

-lack of proper railing surrounding the tanks

-exposing employees to nine-foot falls

-failing to provide fire extinguisher training

Please note: we are not taking this accident lightly or poking fun at it. It is a serious and unfortunate accident that resulted in the loss of someone's life. What we hope to accomplish by sharing this story is to remind you that you can't lose sight of even the simplest of things like slips and falls in the workplace. As part of your workplace safety program, make it a habit to routinely review work areas and ensure that proper safeguards are in place.

This is a topic near and dear to our hearts, so expect us to post on it often. In this case, I'm simply reposting a very well written blog review by a friend and colleague Julie Ferguson, who writes for Workers' Comp Insider. In Julie's recent blog post on Emerging Technologies, she shares with us stories of three different technology advances, all of them relevant to workers' comp and complex care claims. These are great examples of trends in the area of rehabilitative and assistive technology. Enjoy!

Rx Compounding Fraud -- Risky Business for Workers' Comp

A recent article by Dan Reynolds, senior editor of Risk and Insurance titled Compounding Pharmacy Fraud, illuminates the potential for workers' comp fraud, and in some cases, serious injury or death to patients.

I'm just going to post the article for you to review as it does a pretty good job of explaining the issues and concerns.

This is definitely something to watch for on your claims. Whenever you see a script for a compound drug, it should be a red flag for extra precaution or care.
