Roberto Ceniceros of Business Insurance, recently highlighted a case of criminal fraud in the workers' comp system. Mr. Hossein Navaei, a night desk worker at a California hotel, claimed he was the victim of an assault by his supervisor and supervisor's son. The reason for the assault? He claimed he was merely trying to collect wages owed him by his employer.
Mr. Navaei's story didn't pan out. Instead, a jury found him guilty and convicted him for preparing a fraudulent document and attempted perjury for trying to collect workers' comp benefits for his alleged injuries.
A video played for the jury recorded by the hotel's security camera showed there was indeed a verbal argument between Mr. Navaei and his employer, but not the physical attack he claimed caused his injuries.
It gets even more interesting. Apparently, Mr. Navaei, appealed the conditions of his probation. Read the full story by Roberto Ceniceros.
